As the boundaries between artificial intelligence (AI) and human cognition continue to blur, an intriguing question arises: How does learning in humans compare to that in Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT? In this post, we aim to explore the remarkable parallels, as well as the significant contrasts, between these two distinct yet surprisingly interconnected learning processes.

The Pace of Learning: Human Reading vs. LLM Training

The pace at which LLMs learn is truly remarkable, digesting an enormous amount of data in the course of their training. While an LLM is being trained, it undertakes numerous iterations over a dataset, effectively learning from billions of sentences within a time frame of weeks or months, depending on the available computational resources. This process mirrors human reading and comprehension, albeit at an exponentially accelerated rate.

On the other hand, humans learn at a considerably slower pace. We read and comprehend information in a linear sequence, taking time to understand, assimilate, and incorporate new knowledge into our existing cognitive frameworks. This slower pace isn’t a sign of inefficiency but rather a reflection of our deep information processing ability that fosters creative thinking, empathy, and other capacities that are uniquely human.

Refinement: Environmental Influence on Humans vs. Model Adjustments in LLMs

Both humans and LLMs undergo a process similar to “refinement.” For humans, this refinement is influenced by environmental factors such as familial interactions, education, peer group influence, societal norms, and cultural practices. Our cognitive abilities are refined from childhood through education, social interactions, and experiences that collectively shape our understanding of the world.

For LLMs, refinement, or “fine-tuning,” involves making adjustments to model parameters based on a specific dataset after the initial training phase. This step allows the model to enhance its performance in specific tasks, paralleling how human cognition is shaped by unique experiences.

Reinforcement Learning (RL) in Humans and LLMs

Reinforcement learning (RL) in humans translates to learning through a trial-and-error process, or developing an optimal strategy through environmental interactions and feedback. It’s our approach when we learn to ride a bike or play a game; we attempt, we falter, we modify our technique, and attempt again until we succeed.

In the context of LLMs, reinforcement learning implies the introduction of a reward system to steer the learning process. The model learns to generate sequences that maximize a specified reward, which is determined by a reward model or function.

Memory: Human Recall vs. LLM ‘Recollection’

Memory plays a pivotal role in human learning. Our past experiences significantly influence our future actions and decisions. However, LLMs, in their current form, lack a memory system akin to humans’. They generate responses based on learned patterns during training, without the ability to recall past interactions or learn from specific instances.

Emotions and Empathy

An essential facet of human learning is our capacity for emotions and empathy, which are fundamental components of our social cognition. These elements, however, remain currently elusive to LLMs. While AI can mimic understanding emotions based on textual inputs, it does not truly experience emotions as humans do.

Conclusion

Examining human learning and LLM learning uncovers a tableau of intriguing similarities as well as striking differences. LLMs excel at processing and generating text based on learned patterns at an astonishing scale, but they are devoid of the deep understanding, emotional intelligence, and creative abilities inherent in human learning.
